Abstract: Objective To investigate the multi-slice CT findings of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of large airway. Methods A total of 9 patients with histopathologically proved mucoepidermoid carcinoma in trachea or large airway, who were admitted to authors’ hospital during the period from 2005 to 2012,were included in this study. The multi-slice CT imaging features of the lesions were retrospectively evaluated. Results Three tumors were located at the trachea or main bronchus, with the diameter being less than 20 mm. In 3 patients the lesions presented as polypoid soft tissue opacity protruding to the lumen with no obstructive changes. In 6 patients, the lesion was located at median segmental bronchus, lobar or segmental bronchus, presenting as oval mass, with the diameter ranging form 20 mm to 68 mm; distal obstructive atelectasis was detected in on patients, and obstructive pneumonia was seen in 6 patients. On CT scan, all the lesions were manifested as smooth and homogeneous soft tissue density mass with a CT value of about( 54 ± 16) HU,which displayed obvious homogeneous enhancement after contrast injection; the difference in CT value was( 64 ± 14) HU when compared with the preenhanced value. No hilar or mediastinal lymphoadenopathy, pleural effusion,or pleural thickening was found in all patients. Conclusion Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of large airway is mostly seen in young people. The tumors prefer to locate at the large airway distal to the main bronchus. Significant enhancement after contrast media injection and distal obstructive changes, including obstructive atelectasis and obstructive pneumonia, are also the common findings.
