Abstract: The sands oil can be obtained from Indonesian sands by water separation. However it is hard to process and use sands oil for its high content of mechanical impurities, high density and viscosity. The content of mechanical impurities can be reduced by changing density and viscosity of the sands oil, which will help to improve the quality of sands oil. The free setting method is adopted to purify Indonesian sands oil; three factors are investigated to explore its optimum process conditions, such as the time, the amount of light oil and the temperature. The results show that the me-chanical impurities can be reduced efficiently and its content was less than 0.1% by a 72 h free setting at 90 ℃ with adding 40% light oil.
