Properties of Organic Montmorillonite/Epoxy Resin Composite Modified Asphalt

Abstract: The composite modified asphalt was prepared via reactive melt blending process using organic montmorillonite( OMMT) and epoxy resin as modifying agent. The microstructure and morphology of OMMT/epoxy resin composite modified asphalt were characterized by X-ray diffraction( XRD) and fluorescent microscope( FM),respectively.The physical-mechanical property,compatibility and thermal storage stability of the composite modified asphalt were investigated. The results indicate that the OMMT is dispersed in the composite modified asphalt with an exfoliated structure when the content of OMMT is between 1% and 2%,and the epoxy resin is distributed more uniformly in the composite modified asphalt. The tensile strength of composite modified asphalt increases by 25% compared with epoxy resin modified asphalt when the addition of OMMT is 1%. Further,the softening point of OMMT/epoxy resin composite modified asphalt increases,the penetration of 25 ℃ decreases slightly,and the penetration index( PI) rises first and then declines with increasing OMMT content.
