Effect of passivation process on performances of passivation film on mesylate tinplate

Abstract: The effects of the quantity of charge passed during passivation as well as the main salt concentration, pH, and temperature of passivation bath on chrome content and corrosion resistance of passivation film on surface of mesylate tinplate and on its adhesion to subsequent coating were studied. It was found that in range of the selected parameters, the quantity of charge has a remarkable effect on the properties especially coating adhesion of passivation film. The pH of passivation bath has the greatest influence on chrome content and corrosion resistance of passivation film. In practical production, the pH of passivation bath should be controlled at about 4.2. When passivating tinplate with high quantity of charge, the speed of steel strip movement should be appropriately reduced accordingly and the use of excessive current be avoided.
