Investigation on Harmonic Balance Method for Unsteady Flow Simulation

Abstract: The harmonic balance method for unsteady flow simulation of multi-stage turbomachinery is implemented into an in-house finite volume code.The code solves the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations on structured mesh.The harmonic balance method is solved using the Block-Jacobi Runge-Kutta/Implicit time marching scheme developed by the authors.The unsteady flow in a single stage axial compressor is solved using the harmonic balance method and the results are compared to the widely used BDF(Backward Difference Formula) time marching method.Results show that the harmonic balance method is able to predict the periodic unsteady flow in turbomachinery with a small number of harmonics and the computational cost is obviously reduced compared to the BDF time marching method.
