Numerical Analysis of the Influence of Casing’s Shape on Radial Force of a Centrifugal Pump

Abstract: Unsteady numerical simulation with SST k-ω turbulent model was carried out to study the centrifugal pumps with different casing’s shapes,including semispherical and volute casing.The radial force on the two pumps’ impellers was compared at both design and off-design operating conditions.The pressure distribution on the exit of the impeller was also analyzed.The results show that the radial force on impeller was periodical at design operating condition.And the radial force on pump’s impeller with volute casing was larger.The design of volute casing and the existence of volute tongue may be the reason why volute casing pump’s pressure distribution on the exit of impeller was less uniform.It further led to the increase of the radial force on impeller.In addition,the radial force became larger at off-design operating condition.In particular,the radial force’s periodicity at small flow rate condition changed significantly compared with that in design flow rate.
