Abstract: ObjectiveTo observe the efficacy of acupuncture at Back-Shu points in treating lipid metabolism dysfunction due to metabolic syndrome (MS), for providing a safe and effective non-drug treatment for MS.MethodSeventy-six eligible MS patients were randomized into a control group of 39 cases and a treatment group of 37 cases. The control group was intervenedby regular medication, while the treatment group was additionally intervened by acupuncture. Forty days later, the changes of the Body Mass Index (BMI), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were observed.ResultIn the control group, TC, TG, and LDL-C levels were changed significantly after intervention (P<0.05), while the BMI and HDL-C were insignificantly changed (P>0.05); in the treatment group, BMI, TC, TG, LDL-C, and HDL-C were significantly changed after intervention (P<0.05,P<0.01); after intervention, there were significant differences in comparing BMI, TC, LDL-C, and HDL-C between the two groups (P<0.01).ConclusionAcupuncture at Back-Shu points can markedly down-regulate the TG, TC, LDL-C levels and enhance the HDL-C level in MS, indicating that acupuncture can regulate the lipid metabolism dysfunction in MS.
