Design and Experimental Study of Small Methane Heat and Power Cogeneration System in Cold Regions

Abstract: Biogas projects have been rapidly developed in China due to their energy efficiency and environmental benefit.However the biogas production is declined because the thermal insulation in this region cannot support the biogas fermentation. In this study,a set of heating system that is composed of solar and power waste energy is tested. This technology has been demonstrated for a middle temperature fermentation project in Tianjin city. Some key parameters including fermentation heat load,generator heat recoveryutilization rate,and areas of solar collector unit are calculated theoretically to verify whether this heating system can meet the middle temperature condition. The results show that averaged daily generator heat recovery is 36.25,MJ,The biogas project needs additional power from the solar collectors in November,December,January and February to ensure the project stable operation. A continuous testing for the temperature rising effects by this heating system has been conducted from January to March. Fermenter volume is 10,m3,the tank liquid reaches the fermentation temperature level from the 6 days,the cumulative gas production 166.5,m3,generating capacity 146.4,kw·h. By investigation,the electricity meet farmer’s basic needs of living. It is expected that this paper will assist designing a heating system to the household biogas projects in northern cold regions.
