Numerical Research on Impact of Icing on Wind Turbine Blades

Abstract: Numerical calculation had been performed for NREL Phase VI wind turbine under no icing and icing condition with commercial software Numeca in which wind speed ranged from5 m/s to 17 m/s.With the analysis of aerodynamic parameters and load distribution,results showed that icing from experiment can reduce the power by up to 51%,make wind turbine stall ahead of time and make the start-up more difficult.The blade root flap-wise moment will be increased rapidly under higher wind speeds.On the other hand by analyzing the blade spanwise load distribution,icing in the blade tip region,90~100%span,has the most pronounced effect on the wind turbine performance.And this should be the main region of the anti-icing and de-icing system working.
