Fractal Branch Network Model of Heat Extraction in EGS

Abstract: Enhanced or engineering geothermal system(EGS) is aimed to economically exploit heat from hot dry rocks(HDR) located within subsurface 3~10 km depths for earth-surface electricity generation.Since the economic performance of EGS is directly affected by its heat extraction performance,the heat extraction process in the subsurface artificial heat reservoir deserves major attention during R&D of EGSs.The morphology and distribution of fractures in the reservoir are of paramount importance to the heat extraction process.Based on the fractal characteristics of fracture aperture and length,we establish the fractal branch network model of heat extraction in EGS and derive the heat extraction rate expression.The analytical results indicate that many parameters including the pump work,the maximum fracture aperture,the fractal dimension of fracture aperture/tortuosity,the stages or levels of branch network,and the fracture length,have significant impacts on the heat extraction rate of EGS.
