Abstract: In view of drought climate of the Enshi area and low flow of the Qingjiang River and its tributaries since the second half of 2013, water quality was monitored in Enshi City and Lichuan City in the Qingjiang River and its tributaries. According to the Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water(GB3838-2002), a comprehensive pollution index method was used to analyze the current water quality categories. The results showed that the overall water quality of the Qingjiang River’s tributaries was inferior to the Qingjiang River. Most tributaries became city sewage ditches and lost their basic river function. The small flow of the Qingjiang River in the dry season was the main reason causing water quality exceeding the emission standard even though the sewage treatment plant effluent had met the national discharge standard.
