Different Salt Stress on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Cosmos bipinnatus

Abstract: In this paper, the Cosmos bipinnatus was used to test the stress of different salt concentrations on seed germination and explore the influence of Na Cl, Na2SO4 and Na HCO3 on germination and seedling growth characteristics of Cosmos. The results showed that Na2SO4 had a low promotion but high inhibitory effect on Cosmos seed germination. When the salt concentration was lower than 0.05%, the effect of NaHCO3 on seed germination had no obvious difference compared with the control group, but Na Cl produced a significant difference. With the increase of the salt concentrations, the inhibition of performance was as follows: NaHCO3> NaCl > Na2SO4. In Na Cl, Na2SO4 and NaHCO3 treatments, the salt-tolerant suitable concentration of Cosmos seed germination was 0.067%, 0.104% and0.052%, respectively; the salt tolerance median lethal concentration was 0.209%, 0.302% and 0.181%, respectively;and salt tolerance limit was 0.438%, 0.619% and 0.388%, respectively, indicating that the Cosmos seeds had the highest tolerance to salt solution of Na2SO4; and Na HCO3 produced the maximum stress to seed germination. Cosmos seedlings were more sensitive to all the three kinds of salt solution stress. Regardless of the level of Na+concentration,the germination rate, plant height and root length of seedling were inhibited at different degrees. The high concentration of Na HCO3 especially showed high inhibition and no growth trend was observed in crop.
