Selection of uniaxial compressive strength from point load tests for irregular rock specimens

Abstract: Based on lots of point load tests in laboratory,the relative error between point load index of irregular rock specimens and uniaxial compressive strength of standard specimens are discussed.The results show that the results from different evaluating methods has great difference,so empirical formula has its application condition and range.The relative error of conversion formulas in the "Standard for engineering classification of rock masses"is between 2.65% ~ 8.10% which is lesser than that from other methods,so the applicable condition of this method is more wide than other methods.Due to the differences in mechanics properties of hard rock and soft rock,it is suggested to distinguish consideration when the point load index for hard rock and soft rock is evaluated,and the appropriate methods should be selected to determine the accurate and reliable rock strength parameters according to the actual sampling situation.
