Abstract: Information revolution makes the internet become an indispensible part in people’s life, which influences people’s pattern of life and thinking and mode of production. Modern communicative tools, such as QQ, WeChat, Microblog, MSN and Facebook, provide a new platform for people to communicate with each other. As a brand new social cultural phenomenon, network catchwords arise at the historic moment. The paper analyzed the features shared by Chinese and English network catchwords, namely non-independence of the nature, conciseness, short-lived character, innovativeness, and derivation; meanwhile, we studied the reasons for the development of network catchwords and their social influences from the perspective of sociolinguistics.
