Theoretical analysis on aerodynamic similarity for wind turbine and discussion about scaled model tests

Abstract: According to wind turbine characteristics, the dimensional analysis was used to derive wind turbine aerodynamic similarity criteria, which included relative surface roughness criterion, Reynolds criterion and tip speed ratio criterion. It was proposed that designing roughness insensitivity blade was the best way to avoid the influences caused by dissimilar blade surface roughness between prototype and its scaled model. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the kinematic similarity and dynamic similarity couldn’t be simultaneously met through analyzing the relation of Reynolds criterion to tip speed ratio criterion. Therefore, investigating the influences of factors, which result in three dimensional flow such as blade tip vortex and span-wise flow, changing with variation of Reynolds number on aerodynamic performance and the effect of Reynolds number will be a key point for solving the problem about aerodynamic similarity of wind turbine.
