Design of offshore wind turbine electric pitch system based on supercapacitor

Abstract: Pitch system is a key equipment of offshore wind turbine,it plays an important role in wind turbine safety operation. Hydraulic pitch system has some problems such as oil leakage; Battery powered electric pitch system has gradually exposed problem of poor performance at low temperature and short lifespan. In this paper, a design of electric pitch system that employs supercapacitor as back-up power is discussed, and a comparison between battery and supercapacitor is carried out, the conclusion is that offshore wind turbine pitch system with supercapacitor as back-up power can improve wind turbine security and operating efficiency, reduce offshore wind turbine maintenance costs because the supercapacitor has characteristic of low temperature resistance and long lifespan. Through pitch torque analysis, a theoretical calculation and derivation for supercapacitor pitch system selection are carried out, an actual test is done, which provide effective methods for backup power design of offshore wind turbine pitch system
