Predictive control method for coordinating wind and energy storage system based on low-pass filter algorithm

Abstract: Wind farms with configuration of energy storage system can be helpful to reduce volatility of wind power output and increase rate of wind power connected to the grid. Traditional control strategy for coordinating wind and energy storage system is based on first-order low-pass filter(LPF) algorithm,which could easily lead to significant fluctuations in the state of charge(SOC) of energy storage system when it has worked for a long time. Also runtime and storage life are restricted by this way. Therefore a predictive control method for coordinating wind and energy storage system based on low-pass filter algorithm is presented. By combining short and long forecast period and taking relative constraint conditions into consideration to correct deviation of grid-connected power prediction, the volatility of SOC in the whole cycle is reduced at the cost of increasing partial power fluctuations properly on the premise of meeting grid requirements, which contributes to less demand of storage capacity and longer runtime so that economy of hybrid system is enhanced. At last feasibility and effectiveness of this method are verified based on MATLAB/Simulink simulation platform.
