Abstract: Ring Lardner’s"Who Dealt?"is a prototypical text of character narration. The story employs fixed internal focalization with the protagonist as its narrator, and promotes the narrative progression with interactions between the talkative narrator and three unvoiced narratees, all of whom are present as the story happens. This essay aims to analyze the narrative characteristics of"Who Dealt?",paying special attention to the functions of the character narrator and the character narratees,as well as the multi-leveled and indirect nature of narrative communication in character narration.Meanwhile, the rhetorical effects of character narration will help us appreciate the art of Ring Lardner in his circuitous depiction of sorrow and despair beneath apparent gaiety.
