Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to explore the coupling relationship between intensive use of cultivated land and economic development. Method of the coupling model was used based on the systematic science theory. The results indicated that( 1 ) economic development was the necessary but not sufficient condition for the improvement of intensive use of cultivated land;(2) The changing rate of the intensity level was less than the rate of economic growth; (3) The coupling degree between intensive use of cultivated land and economic development had experienced two stages, i.e., the uncoordinated stage and the ultimate development stage, between 1991 and 2009. It was concluded that the agricultural policy should be further reformed to guide a reasonable input of cultivated land, and to adjust into a more intensive use of cultivated land appropriately, which were helpful for ensuring national food security and agricultural sustainable development.
