Abstract: Objective To evaluate and analyze the long-term efficacy and safety of combined pterygium excision and conjunctival autografting for the treatment of primary pterygium .Methods Subjects included 113 patients (117 eyes) with primary pterygium who were treated in our hospital with combined pterygium excision and conjunctival limbal autograft transplantation .Among the subjects , sixty-five eyes received surgery alone , and the other 52 eyes received surgery and tropical medication therapies .Conjunctival autografts were obtained from upper temporal limbus and secured with 10-0 mon-ofilament nylon. All patients were followed for 33 to 54 months (mean 39 months). Results In 65 eyes that underwent surgery alone, pterygium recurred in four (6.15%) eyes.In 52 eyes that received surgery and tropical mitomycin C and steroids, only two eyes (3.85%) were found to had recurred pterygium .This difference was significant ( P <0.05). Conclusion We conclude that combined pterygium excision and conjunctival limbal autografting is effective and safe for the treatment of primary pterygium .Addition of tropical medications such as mitomycin C and steroids would further reduce the risk of recurrence .
