Abstract: AIM:To study the clinical effects of hydroxyapatite (HA)plus platelet-rich plasma (PRP)in the treatment of periodontal bone defect.METHODS:20 patients with moderate or severe chronic periodontitis and displaying at least one tooth with advanced intrabony defect were included. The teeth with lesions were randomly treated with HA/PRP and HA respectively.X-ray films and following clinical parameters were assessed before and after sur-gery:gingival recession (GR),probing depth (PD),and clinical attachment level (CAL).The change of mean opti-cal density(MOD)value of the bone defect are a was taken as a reference for bone mineral density.RESULTS:There was no significant difference between the two groups in GR,PD or CAL at 3 or 6 months after surgery. The HA/PRP group showed a more significant CAL gain at 3 months after surgery than that of the HA group (P<0.05),but not at 6 months(P>0.05).The X-ray films showed MOD was significantly higher in HA/PRP group than that in HA group at 3 months and 6 months after surgery (P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Both HA and HA/PRP are effective in the treat-ment of periodontal bone defect.PRP has a promoting effect on the mineralization of new bone.
