Abstract: T hermal decomposition in nitrogen atmosphere and thermal oxidation decomposition in air atmosphere of calcium stearate were investigated by TGA and DSC . The decomposition products were characterized by FTIR .The thermal oxidation decomposition mechanism was discussed .The thermal de-composition of calcium stearate included losing absorbed water ,decomposing to calcium carbonate and fur-ther decomposing to calcium oxide .During the thermal oxidation progress of calcium stearate ,the carbon-yl group was attacked first and then the C-H chain structure was destroyed .
