Abstract: Deformation behavior of beta-tin crystal is reviewed to provide a critical assessment of the current understanding of the subject. The review covers three main parts: (1) tensile properties, including the effect of temperature; (2) creep behavior with emphasis on the dominant creep mechanism; (3) dislocation structure and slip systems. The understanding of physical properties ofβ-tin with the single crystal structure of h.c.p is not sufficiently compared with the metal with crystal structure of f.c.c and b.c.c. The investigation on single crystalβ-tin not only helps us to discover the fundamental mechanical behavior, and meso-scale mechanics simulation of polycrystallineβ-tin, but also can provide significance guidelines for the industry development of new series of lead-free solder.
