Abstract: A number of fire scenarios have been studied using large eddy simulation software FDS for a commercial complex in Hunan to verify the effectiveness of the proposed atrium smoke control design.Due to the architectural design of the building with high ceiling and open ended atrium,a number of factors that may impact the smoke control design have been studied. The factors include means of fresh air makeup, makeup location, environmental temperature, external wind effect and fire sizes. The above factors are studied to ensure the efficiency of the proposed smoke control strategy.Investigation results showed that:natural makeup can result in a high smoke exhaustion rate;the natural makeup position at either B1 or F1do not have significant implication;a higher environmental temperature will increase the smoke layer temperature,a tenable egress condition can be maintained for different design fire sizes with the consideration of external wind effect.
