Abstract: In this review, we present the main researches on liquefaction characteristics of saturated sand containing silt or clay. The research results show that silt content, silt particle size and sand grain composition have a great impact on liquefaction characteristics of saturated sand containing silt. The liquefaction resistance of saturated sand containing silt may increase or decrease as silt content increases. In some cases, there might exist a limit silt content such that the dynamic strength of sand containing silt changes non-monotonously as the silt content increases. For sand-clay mixtures, the liquefaction resistance initially decreases as the clay content increases and then turn to increase as the clay content continues to increase. Liquefaction characteristics of clay sand greatly relate to plasticity index ( PI) of clay particles. Sand in different grain composition situations may have different reactions to PI values of clay particles.
