Study on the Difference of Surface Free Energy of Typical Carbon Fiber

Abstract: To explore the difference of surface free energy among different types of carbon fibers and the effect of sizing on surface free energy, the surface free energies and the dispersion/polar components of CarbonⅢ、CarbonⅦ、M40、M40JB and M55JB are determined by wilhelmy hanging plate method and OWRK theory. The results indicate : the rank of total surface free energy is CarbonⅢ>M40>M55JB>M40JB>CarbonⅦ, the distribution of polar component is about 11%~25%. The polar component declines obviously without sizing, the reduction of CarbonⅢ、CarbonⅦ、M40 and M55JB is 6%, 21%, 18%, 16%, respectively, the polar component of M40JB changes a little, that perhaps depends a lot on the number of polar groups in sizing.
