Abstract: By measuring soil bulk density, total porosity, nutrient content and nutrient reserves of soil samples taken from 0 ~ 60 cm soil layer, the change of soil physical and chemical properties of the 3 28-year-old forest plantations of pure Castanopsis hystrix( CH), pure Pinus massoniana( PM), and mixed C. hystrix and P. massoniana( mixed CH / PM) were studied at the Experimental Centre of Tropical Forestry,Chinese Academy of Forestry. The results showed that the bulk density and total porosity at top-soil horizon( 0 ~ 20 cm) of the mixed CH / PM were significantly better than those of CH and PM( P < 0. 05). The nutrient( organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) concentration in various soil horizons or nutrient storages in soil horizon( 0 ~ 60 cm) of mixed CH / PM were higher than those of PM; however, the difference of those chemical indicators between mixed CH / PM and CH changed according to different conditions. In generally, mixed CH / PM was better than PM and CH in improving soil physical and chemical properties in south subtropical area of China.
