Corrosion Behavior of Nb Heavy Rail in Simulated Industrial Atmosphere

Abstract: On the basis of manufacture of U76CrRE heavy rail steel, the samples with 0 wt%-0.09wt% content of Nb adding into the steel were prepared by adopting 25 kg mid-frequency furnace melting and forging process. The effects of Nb alloying on the corrosion behavior and action mechanism of heavy rail steel were studied by periodic infiltration corrosion test and electro-chemical testing technique in simulated industrial atmosphere. The results show that the addition of alloying element Nb promotes the formation of α-FeOOH and increases the content of α-FeOOH, enhances the corrosion erosion resistance of the rust layer, to some extent, thus, improves the corrosion resistance of rail steel. As the Nb content increasing, the adhesion between rust layer and the substrate loosens, and the corrosion resistance of the sample rail steel decreases.
