Abstract: The controversies between Leo Strauss and Alexandre Kojève are of tremendously theoretical and political significance in the history of western thought in the twentieth century. Kojève believes that philosophy by its definition is historical, and philosophers cannot obtain the ultimate theoretical truth without realizing a political state which is universal and homogeneous. Strauss,on the contrary, insists on the classical understanding of philosophy and rejects both historicism and radical philosophical enlightenment. The controversies between Strauss and Kojève,which apparently concern the interrelationship between philosophy and politics, fundamentally bear the divergences over truth and ontology in the classical and modern conception as the core issues.
