Abstract: Through investigation and statistical study of the 197 Jinshi (successful candidates in the imperial examination) steles at the Confucian Temple in Beijing and related sampling analysis, this article shows that there are nine kinds of deterioration problems with the Jinshi steles, among which pulverization and superficial pollution are the most serious. These steles are made of marble, argillaceous limestone, or sandstone. Acid rain is the main factor for steles’ efflorescence, which has high sulphur content.
