Abstract: A number of the accidents of overturning collapse of box girder bridges under the action of heavy-duty vehicle eccentric load happening in the recent years have aroused extensive concern among engineering circle.Through comparison of the bridge design codes of China and other counties and analysis of the accident case of a bridge,the proposals and the related issues deserving study for the overturning stability design of the bridges are put forward.Under the action of the eccentric load,the torsional deformation will occur in the girders of the multi-span continuous girder bridges and when the overturning stability coefficients are to be determined, the calculating of the elastomer by the method of the rigid body is incorrect.In the design of the bridges,the reliability indices of the vertical strength of the bridges should be comprehensively considered,the rational lateral global overturning stability coefficients should be determined so as to avoid that the lateral global overturning instability should take place before the failure of the vertical strength.The material for the bridge rubber bearings should be the hyperelastic material. The mechanical behavior of the bearings and the interaction between the bearings and the box girders in the process of overturning should be studied intensively.
