Abstract: This study analyses the definitions and core ideologies of Feng shui by means of summarizing Chinese classic texts.It traces the origins of Feng shui and points out that in Chinese philosophical sages’ view, dwelling,which correlates with culture,is regarded as the essential mediator among human,society,and nature.Thus,livable environment gains the value of ontology.In practising the theories of surviving,especially the theory of Feng shui,Chinese ancient people explored the mechanism of nature and society.As a result,the concepts of Qi and Yin-Yang were formed and used by philosophical sages to research into the principles of the world.Finally,these concepts became the core category in the critical thinking of Chinese traditional philosophy, and strongly influenced the aesthetic thoughts of music, painting,calligraphy and architecture.
