Increasing productivity and lowering operating costs while reducing GHG emissions in steelmaking

Abstract: Steelmakers are faced with the challenge of finding ways to reduce CO 2 emissions without seriously undermining process efficiency and productivity. This paper describes the development of process optimization technology for both non-integrated EAF and integrated BF-BOF steelmaking that is designed to simultaneously improve productivity,reduce operating costs and lower GHG emissions. Topics covered include a review of Tenova ’s newly launched i Steeltechnology program which incorporates proven EFSOPoff-gas analysis together with additional advanced sensors and process models into leading edge technological solutions for integrated and non-integrated steelmaking- i EAF,i RECOVERYand i BOF. In addition,this paper discusses the important role of selective use of DRI produced with Tenova HYL ENERGIRON technology for simultaneously increasing productivity and reducing emissions for the BF-BOF route.
