Research into Ziegler-Natta catalyst modified with BCl3 for 1-butene polymerization

Abstract: Ziegler-Natta catalyst for 1-butene polymerization was modified by treatment with BCl3 solu-tion. The influences of the molar ratio of B to Ti, reaction temperature, reaction time, etc. on the performance of the catalyst were studied through the orthogonal experiment. The effects of the factors on the Ti and B content, catalytic activity and isotacticity of the polymer were researched. The activity of the modified catalyst increased by 1.4 times in comparison with that of the untreated one under the following optimal conditions for modification of the catalyst with BCl3: the molar ratio of B to Ti was 1, the reaction temperature was 60 ℃ and the reaction time was 2 h. The factors influencing the Ti content, catalytic activity and isotacticity of the polymer, ranked in descending order were as follows: the reaction temperature, the molar ratio of B to Ti and the reaction time. And the factors influencing the B content ranked in descending order were as follows: the reaction temperature, the reaction time and the molar ratio of B to Ti.
