Effects of compatilizers on properties of HDPE-based wood-plastic composites

Abstract: The effects of maleic anhydride grafted ethylene-1-octene copolymer(POE-g-MAH), chlori-nated polyethylene(CPE)and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer(EVA) as compatilizers respectively on mechani-cal properties and processing rheological properties of high density polyethylene(HDPE)-based wood-plastic composites were studied. The impact fractured surfaces of the composites were studied by means of scanning electron microscope(SEM). The results show that the three compatilizers can all improve the dispersion of the pine wood flour in HDPE matrix and amend the compatibilities between pine wood flour and HDPE matrix, and then enhance the mechanical properties and processing properties of the composites. Among the three compatilizers, POE-g-MAH is the most obviously to improve the mechanical properties of the composites and EVA can amend the processing rheological properties of the composites. The best dosage of the compatilizers is 3.0-6.0 phr.
