Surface Modification of YG6X Hard Alloy by High Current Pulsed Electron Beam Irradiation

Abstract: The surfaces of YG6X hard alloy were modified by high current pulsed electron beam irradiation.The influence of the surface modification conditions on the microstructures and mechanical properties was evaluated.The modified surfaces were characterized with optical microscopy(OM),scanning electron microscopy,X-ray diffraction,and conventional mechanical probes.The results show that the HCPEB irradiation considerably improved the mechanical properties and microstructures.For example,after 20 pulses,its hardness increased by 16%,from 21 GPa to about 24.3 GPa,accompanied with a considerable increase of wear-resistance.We found that the HCPEB irradiation rapidly melted the surfaces and reduced the size of WC grains.The inter-diffusion of WC and Co clusters resulted in formation of WC 1-x,Co 3 W 3 C,and Co 3 W 9 C 4 phases,and explained the mechanism of the surface modification by HCPEB irradiation.However,the thermal fatigue cracks,originated from too many pulses,negatively affected the mechanical properties.
