Design of Reversible Exit Lanes at Urban At-grade Intersections

Abstract: To alleviate traffic congestion at urban at-grade intersections, this paper proposes a method for traffic management through designing reversible exit lanes. The paper first presents the definition of revers-ible exit lanes at intersections, and points out that only the exit lane adjacent to roadway median can be re-versible. By analyzing the constraints of the reversible lane, the paper discusses the design parameters of reversible lanes, including the number of lanes, length, time of utilization, and corresponding supporting measures. Finally, the paper elaborates the application of the method using the intersection of Jingshi Road and Shungeng Road in Jianan as an example. Traffic survey data in Jinan shows that the number of left turn vehicles discharged by the reversible lane is between 8 and 12 during each signal cycle. Simulation da-ta further shows that east and west bound experiences a 63%increase of left turn volume, 35%reduction of the maximum queue length at the stop line, and 29%decrease of average delay of left turn vehicles with-in a signal cycle.
