Abstract: Taking the Chinese top leaders’ speeches during the Sino-ASEAN Summit as example, a corpus-based study from the perspective of critical discourse analysis is carried out to explore how the national identity is discursively constructed in their speeches and to show the interactive relationship between discourse and national identity construction. The analysis reveals:Chinese top leaders, through selections and collaborative uses of different types of vocabulary, construct a national image and national identity --“collaborators”;critical discourse analysis can be conducted as a useful tool to uncover the hidden relationship between discourse practice (speeches) and social practice (national identity construction).
