Preliminary study on methane production by fermentation of Saccharina japonica

Abstract: Methane produced by fermentation of macroalgae can provide a new route for the development of clean energy.The effective two-phase statistical method was used to optimize the fermentation conditions for the methane production by Sarccharina japonica.Firstly,the effects of fermentation condition parameters such as salinity,temperature and initial pH on methane fermentation were investigated by single-factor method.Subsequently,response surface methodology(RSM) based on a three-level,three-variable Box-Behnken experimental design was employed to evaluate interactive effects of three key factors including salinity,temperature and initial pH.The results of fermentation optimization were as follows: salinity 6.58,temperature 28.92 ℃,initial pH 7.07.And the total methane production of macroalgae fermentation for 60 days was raised from 5 378 ml to 6 310 ml,a 17.3% increase compared to the initial fermentation conditions before the optimization.
