Abstract: This paper discusses the types of athermal design and the basic principle of optical passive athermal design. By the optical passive athermal design program, a large-aperture, wide-field assisting pilot athermal infrared lens is designed with bandwidth of 8~12μm, focal length f′=16.5 mm, F#=0.8, and the field of view 36.5°×27.8°. This type of lens is characterized by small volume, light weight and simple structure which is suitable for assisting pilot system. In addition, there is no necessity to focus the infrared lens under the operating temperature range of -40℃~60℃, because it can automatically eliminate the impact of thermal difference and always guarantee the clear image. Besides, it can meet the needs of athermal design through the cold region(low-temperature)test.
