Abstract: Conjugated estrogens ( CEs) are an important existing form of natural estrogens. They can hydrolyze to free forms in the environment and subsequantly induce endocrine disrupting effects, thus not only causing potential environmental risks but also interfering with the accuracy of pollution survey and toxicity assessment of natural estrogens. We discuss in detail the influences of the specific chemical structures of CEs on their detection, transformation and environmental risk, and compares the strength and weakness of several commonly-used detection methods. We also summarizes the occurrence and fate of CEs in wastewater treatment facilities and natural waters, so as to provide references for relevant studies in China.
