Abstract: Peaceful protests broke out in Syria on 18 March 2011,and the subsequent emergence of a civil war threatened the ll-year-long rule of the Bashar al-Assad government.The civil war cost up to 80,000 lives up until May 2013,1 making it the bloodiest battlefield in the Middle East in decades.This article analyses the current situation,its historical roots and the ongoing impacts of the civil war in order to forecast the future trends of the Syrian turmoil.
