Abstract: Objective To investigate human cytomegalovirus infection (CI) within the vascular wall of thromboangiitis obliterans (TO). Methods Vascular specimens from 41 patients with thromboangiitis obliterans and 14 normal controls were analyzed by PCR. The nucleic acid sequence of enhancer located in the upstream of immediate early(IE) gene of cytomegalovirus was used as target region for detection of cytomegalovirus DNA. The PCR products were visualized after electrophoresis. Results Cytomegalovirus DNA was found in 28 (68%) out of the 41 specimens and only in 2 (14%) out of the 14 normal vessels. Conclusions The results suggested that there was an evidence of CI in the vascular wall of TO. The association between CI and TO needs further investigation.
