Abstract: This paper deals with the skeleton of leuciscine fishes of China, including neurocranium, vertebral column and appendicular bones. Based on the observation of the skeleton of 17 species belonging to 13 genera of the subfamily, the common characteristics of the skeleton of the subfa-mily have been studied and a comparision of the characteristics of some bones has been made among the genera.The neurocranium can be divided into 4 regions, i.e., olfactory, orbital, otic and occipital regions. The names and the numbers of the bones of each region have been given, for example, l supraoccipital, 2 exoccipitals and l bassoccipital in the occipital region. There are many bones of the neurocraniums of the subfamily which are stable in different species belonging to the same genus but different in different genera, for example, ethmoid, vomer, basioccipital, and so on.The numbers of abdominal vertebrae and caudal vertebrae of some species of the subfamilyare given in Table 1. The vertebra number of the subfamily are from 39 to 61 which consists ofboth 21-29 abdominal vertebrae and 16-24 caudal vertebrae, The first caudal vertebrae ofRutilus rutilus lacustris possesses both upper and lower holes, based on which, the writer's opinionis that the caudal vertebra should occupy a haemal spine but the abdominal v. no haemal spine.Both the 2nd and the 3rd vertebrae do or do not fuse each other in fhe subfamily. The suspensorium vary morphylogically and can be diveded into 2 patterns, one is with plate shaped, e.g., Ctenopharyngodon idellus, Squliobarbus curriculus; another is ''V" partem with "V" shape, for example, Luciobarbus macrocephalus, Ochetobius elongatus. There are many varieties of intramyoseptal bones (intermuscular boues), and each variety can be found in each specimen studied. Leuciscus possesses two patterns of skeleton, i.e. both Leuciscus idellus-pattern and Leuciscus waleckii-pattern. The middle plate of the urohyal being as long as its basal plate in the former, instead of shorter than the basal plate in the latter; the scapular possessing a hole in thc former, but no hole in the latter; the suspensorium possessing lateral process at both ends of its ventral edges and being both narrow and long in the former but no lateral process at all and being broad and short in the latter; the rib of 4th vertebra being as long as the length of its suspensorium (from its dorsal edge to its ventral edge) in the former but shorter than its length in the latter.Luciobrama macrocephalus possesses both many specific and primary characteristics, Some of the former are the following: :be anterior edge of tle sphenotic with a developed crest; a developed articular between the posterion edge of the sphenoid and anterior edge of the prootic; the basioccipital not touch the prootic; the quadrat with a large hole, etc.. Some of the latter are as follows, the pharyageal bone long, the pharyngeal process simple and the suspensorium not developed vell.
