Abstract: In anesthetized and thoracotomized dogs under artificial respiration,thedynamic changes of the“force effect”of the left and right ventricles were observedin terms of its peak ventricular pressure and their dP/dt under progressive hypoxia.During acute hypoxia,the rise in pulmonary pressure was positively correlatedwith the degree of hypoxia.The“force effect”of the left ventricle did not showa simultaneous change with the change of the right one.With a step-wise in-crease in the severity of hypoxia,the left ventricular peak pressure gave a biphasicchange and showed an earlier decrease than the right one,furthermore the negativedP/dt_(max)of the left ventricle decreased earlier than the positive dP/dt_(max).The cardiac pump failure occurred when the right ventricle showed a decreaseof“force effect”at severe hypoxia.The results suggest that the alteration of ventricular diastolic mechanics is ofimportance in evaluating the cardiac pump function.The occurrence of the pro-gressive decrease of the“force effect”of the left ventricle during acute hypoxia wouldbe a useful index for assessing the tolerance of the cardiac pump.
