Abstract: A new method, the ray parameter method, is presented in this paper to derive velocity- or its linear gradient-depth information, directly from multi-channel seismic data. Compared to the well-known stacking velocity spectrum based on DIX' two term traveltime equation or to the τ-p mapping developed lately, the ray parameter method not only can be used for wide angle reflection and/or refraction data but also gives the velocity structure with a high ratio of signal to noise(S/N). The method is based on Bullen's traveltime parameter equations and the iterative process is carried out by the derivative to ray parameter p, so the automatic inversion by computer becomes practical. The velocity analysis by the method on the reflection data frown a sediment pond on the flanks of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near IPOD 396 was carried out as an example to show the feasibility and advantage of this method, which produced high resolution information with high S/N. The linear velocity gradient of the sediment stratum was 1.9s~(-1) with a related semblance value for the basement reflection as high as 0.38.
