Abstract: A single subcutaneous injection of croton oil(5% mixture in paraffin oil)given to white mice the same day,or 1 or 2 days before injection of Japanese B encephalitis virus, reduced mortality and prolonged survival time of these animals in comparison with controls. Difference of mortality of the treated animals and controls was statistically significant,higher levels of reliability being attained in animals given croton oil on the same day or one day before virus than in those injected with oil two days prior to virus. The effects of croton oil on the nervous system is invoked to explain the results,but the pos- sibility of an influence of croton oil on virus potency is also discussed.
