Abstract: Experiments were carried out in 1983-1984 on apple trees'Golden Deli-cious', 'Double Red', and 'Fuji' young apple trees grafted on Malus micromalus Mak. with M 7 as interstock and planted in 1979. The per-centage of flower bud formed aftertwisting were 74.8-77.2%,43.6-58.0%, and 28.7-32.4% for 'Golden Delicious', 'Double Red', and 'Fuji', respectively. In the following year, the effect of treatment on flower bud formation was more pronounced. The proper time for shoot twisting was the period of rapid shoot'growth in spring for 'Golden Delicio-us', and the period of slower shoot growth for both 'Double Red' and 'Fuji'. When twisted, the rate of net photosynthesis of leaves on the hung-down section of treated shoots of 'Golden Delicious' decreased, but not long after, significantly increased. Phosphorus assimilation and nuclei acid synthesis in the terminals of treated shoots tended to be gradually stronger. In the hung-down section of the treated shoots, only trace of 32p was observed within 16 hours after treatment. The 32p accumulated and gradually reached a peak at about th'e 10th day after treatment, and decreased significantly thereafter finally remaining constant at a low sevel.
