Abstract: Under the influence of sodium pentobarbital (40 mg/kg), the initial blood sugar response of the rabbits to alloxan (150 mg/kg) is markedly potentiated. This increased response is especially evident in the initial hyperglycemic phase. After hypophysectomy, double adrenalectomy, or bilateral resection of the major and minor splanchnic nerves as well as three segments of the sympathetic chains with their ganglia below the diaphragm, the increment of the initial hyperglycemia is decreased in different amounts respectively, indicating that this response is of a central origin, reaching the peripheral organs by way of a humoral and a nervous route. The hypoglycemic phase of alloxan shows no significant change in the present experiment. Thus, the initial blood sugar changes induced by alloxan involve a complex mechanism, in which the central nervous system appears to play an important role in regulating the sugar response.
