Abstract: In order to consider the spatial property of a shock in a turbomachine correctly and in accordance with a three-dimensional steady transonic flow, the basic equations on the S1 and s2 stream surfaces in a four-dimensional "space" are derived through expanding the concept of the stream surface to the unsteady case. These equations will be valid for a three-dimensional unsteady flow, too. Applying the characteristics theory to the equations, the characteristic compatibility relations are obtained, and the boundary conditions are established. These equations and boundary conditions with the proper initial conditions entirely define the problem of the transonic flows with shocks on the two kinds of the stream surfaces. Based on the steps of a complete method of solution for the three-dimensional flow suggested in this paper and using a suitable difference scheme the flow may be solved numerically.
